FAQs

What to Expect

Can I really complete this online, or will I need help?

Absolutely. We’ve designed When I Go to feel like filling out any other online form—think ordering groceries or booking a flight. Each section has plain-English explanations, helpful examples, and you can save and return anytime. Most people complete their plan over a few cozy Sunday mornings with coffee.

Is this legally binding like a will?

When I Go captures your personal wishes and preferences—the meaningful details that legal documents often miss. While we help you document important information, we always recommend having formal legal documents (will, advance directives) prepared by an attorney. Think of us as the companion to your legal papers—the human touches they don’t cover.

How long does it take to complete everything?

There’s no rush. Some people document their basic wishes in 20 minutes. Others spend weeks adding stories, letters, and memories. On average, people have a comfortable plan within 1 – 2 hours over a few sessions. Remember: done is better than perfect, and you can always update your plan at anytime.

Will this help my family know what to do when the time comes?

Yes. Your family receives a clear, organized guide to your wishes—from the practical (who to notify, which funeral home you prefer) to the personal (your favorite flowers, the music you want). No guessing, no arguments, just clarity when they need it most.

Can I change my key contact?

Yes. You can add or delete a key contact at any time.

Can I change things after I've saved them?

Yes. Life changes, and your plans can too. Update anything, anytime—add new songs, rewrite letters, change preferences. Your plan grows with you. That’s why we built it to be flexible, not final.

Billing

Do you really charge just $59? What's the catch?

No catch. $59 gives you lifetime access to document and store all your wishes. The small $12 annual fee (starting year 2) maintains your secure digital vault and ensures your family can always access your information. No hidden fees, no upsells, just transparent pricing.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. Start with our free plan to explore the platform and choose your religious and physical being preferences. To select more options, simply upgrade to the complete plan to access all of When I Go’s features, whenever you’re ready—whether it’s today or next year. No pressure.

What if I can't afford the $59 right now?

Start with the free plan—it covers your essential preferences.

Why is there an annual fee after the first year?

The $12 yearly fee keeps your information secure, backed up, and accessible to your family. It also covers platform improvements and ensures we’re here when your family needs us—whether that’s next year or the future.

After You Go

How will my family access my information?

You identify your key contacts now. They receive an email with a link to access your plan when the time comes. You also have the ability to print, or email your plan at any time if you would like to store it, or share it with your loved ones.

Is my information private while I'm alive?

Yes. Unless you print or email your plan and share it with a loved one.

Can family members edit my wishes after I'm gone?

No. Your wishes are locked and preserved exactly as you wrote them. Family members can view and print but cannot change your words. However, they can add their own memories and photos to your memorial space if you’ve enabled that feature.

Other Common Questions

Do I need to know all the details about funeral options?

Not at all. We guide you through choices with simple explanations. Don’t know the difference between burial and cremation options? We explain everything in plain language. If you don’t know something now, you can always update later.

Can I write letters to loved ones for future events like weddings or graduations?

Yes! Many people love this feature. Write letters for your daughter’s wedding, your grandchild’s 18th birthday, or “when you need mom’s advice.” These will become treasured gifts of love and wisdom.

Is this appropriate for someone young and healthy?

Absolutely. Life is beautifully unpredictable. Just like young parents document guardianship wishes, having a plan isn’t pessimistic—it’s a profound act of love at any age. Plus, starting young means you can add stories and memories over decades.

What if I don't have anyone to leave this information to?

You’re not alone. Many people use When I Go to communicate their wishes to neighbors, friends, or care facilities. This platform helps individuals share their preferences, making it easier for others to understand and respect their desires.

Can I use this for my parents who aren't tech-savvy?

Yes. Many adult children set up accounts and document their parents’ wishes together—it becomes a loving and meaningful conversation over Sunday dinner.
